Sports We Treat & Train

Golf Injury Physical Therapy & Recovery

Golf injuries treated, golf games rebuilt. The swing loads the spine, elbows, and hips thousands of times a season — we treat what golf breaks, and we're Greater Lansing's TPI-certified home for coming back longer and pain-free.

Common golf injuries we treat

Most golf injuries come from repetition, rotation, and rust — thousands of swings through a body that's lost mobility somewhere. These are the ones we see every week.

Golfer's elbow

Pain on the inside of the elbow or forearm (medial epicondylitis) from repetitive gripping and impact. The most famous golf injury — and one of the most treatable with hands-on therapy and progressive loading.

Low back pain

The #1 complaint in golf. The modern swing puts enormous rotational force through the lumbar spine — especially when stiff hips or a rigid mid-back make the low back do rotation it wasn't built for.

Shoulder & rotator cuff pain

The lead shoulder takes stress at the top of the backswing and through impact. Impingement and rotator cuff irritation show up as pain at the top of the swing or aching after a round.

Wrist & hand pain

Tendinitis from impact, turf contact, and grip changes — often on the lead wrist. Left alone, it turns every divot into a wince.

Knee pain

The lead knee absorbs twisting force through impact and follow-through. Meniscus irritation and arthritis flare-ups are common — and manageable without giving up the game.

Stiff hips & lost rotation

Not an injury yet — but the cause of many. Lost hip rotation steals swing speed and sends the force somewhere else, usually your low back. This is where a movement screen earns its keep.

Why golfers from across Greater Lansing come to us

Dr. Nathan Rourke, co-owner of The Therapy Institute, is Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) certified and SuperSpeed Golf certified — the same assessment system used on professional tours. That matters for injuries, not just distance: a TPI screen connects where it hurts to why it hurts, so treatment fixes the swing fault that’s grinding on your elbow or back instead of just resting it until next season.

Assessments, recovery plans, and strength programs are all under one roof in Haslett — minutes from courses in East Lansing, Okemos, Bath, DeWitt, and Williamston. Injury treatment is typically covered by insurance with a referral; performance work is direct-pay. Either way, we work with you until you’re back to full, pain-free rounds.

Golf questions we hear a lot

Can I keep golfing while I recover?
Usually, yes — in a modified way. Our goal is almost never ‘stop playing’; it’s to adjust volume, address the cause, and keep you on the course while the tissue heals. Total rest is the last resort, not the first.
Is golf injury treatment covered by insurance?
Typically yes — golfer’s elbow, back pain, and shoulder injuries are treated like any other orthopedic condition. Bring a physician referral and we’ll verify your coverage before your first visit. Performance-side training (swing-speed programs, golf fitness) is direct-pay through the Performance Lab.
How is this different from a golf lesson?
A teaching pro fixes your technique; we fix your body. If stiff hips physically can’t rotate, no lesson can fix your early extension. Our TPI-certified therapists screen your body against your swing and fix the physical limits — then your pro’s lessons actually stick.
How long does golfer's elbow take to heal?
It varies with severity and how long you’ve had it — typically weeks to a few months with proper treatment and loading. The pattern we see most: the earlier it’s treated, the faster it resolves. Waiting a season usually makes it a longer project.
I'm healthy — can you just help me hit it further?
That’s the other half of what we do. Head to Golf Performance for TPI screens and SuperSpeed overspeed training — no injury or referral required.
