Sports We Treat & Train

Running Injury Physical Therapy & Recovery

Up to half of runners get injured every year, and almost none of it is bad luck — it's load, mechanics, and strength. All three are fixable, usually without stopping running entirely.

Common running injuries we treat

Running injuries are overuse injuries — which means they have causes, and causes have fixes.

Runner's knee (patellofemoral pain)

The ache around or behind the kneecap on runs, stairs, and long sits. Hip and quad strength plus small mechanical adjustments resolve most cases — the knee is usually the messenger, not the problem.

Shin splints & stress injuries

Shin pain that builds with mileage is a bone-loading problem. Caught early it's weeks; ignored into a stress fracture it's a season. The difference is acting on it.

IT band syndrome

Sharp outside-of-knee pain that shows up at the same mileage every run. Foam rolling alone won't fix it — hip strength and stride adjustments will.

Achilles tendinopathy

Morning stiffness and pain that 'warms up' mid-run. Tendons rebuild through progressive loading — the exact opposite of complete rest.

Plantar fasciitis

The first-steps-out-of-bed heel pain. Calf strength, foot loading, and footwear all factor in; most cases resolve without injections or inserts-for-life.

Hip & glute pain

Deep aches in the hip or glute that build with mileage — sometimes tendinopathy, sometimes the hip joint itself. Worth diagnosing properly before it changes your gait.

How we get you back on the road

Assessment, recovery, and strength plans from doctors of physical therapy — we work with you until the problem is resolved and you're back at peak performance.

Assess

A full evaluation of your injury and your sport-specific movement — we find the cause, not just the sore spot.

First visit

Recover

Hands-on treatment and a plan to calm pain and restore motion. Injury care is typically covered by insurance with a referral.

Insurance-based

Rebuild

Progressive strength and mobility work targeted at what your sport demands — so the problem doesn't come back.

Either track

Return

A graded return to play, with optional performance training to come back better than before the injury.

Direct, cash-based

Why runners come to us

Because “stop running” isn’t a treatment plan — it’s a pause button with a relapse built in. Our therapists are runners’ therapists: gait on film, strength measured, training history respected, and a return plan in real mileage. When you’re healthy and want the next PR, Endurance & Running in the Performance Lab picks up where rehab ends.

Running questions we hear a lot

Do I have to stop running while I recover?
Usually not entirely — for most overuse injuries, we adjust volume, intensity, and surfaces rather than prescribing zero. Runners who keep some load heal into running shape, not couch shape. Bone stress injuries are the exception where real rest matters.
What happens at a running assessment?
We film your gait, measure strength and mobility where running demands it (calves, hips, single-leg control), and go through your training history — mileage, paces, shoes, surfaces, and injury timeline. The plan comes from the pattern, not just the sore spot.
Is running injury treatment covered by insurance?
Typically yes, with a physician referral. Gait analysis, strength programming, and race-build coaching run through the cash-based Endurance & Running program.
Will strength training make me a slower, heavier runner?
The research says the opposite: runners who strength train get injured less and run more economically. Two focused sessions a week programmed around your mileage is the highest-return training change most runners can make.
